Leadership and People Management in Health, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Nigeria

Following a request for the Lagos State Health Commission, RIPA International designed a bespoke training solution on Leadership and People Management in Health. The requirement by the commission was that they wanted a course which developed the leadership capacity of senior managers in health institutions across the Lagos state. A particular objective was to enhance participant’s capacity to use resources at their disposal more effectively and deliver improved services to the public.

This one week course, which was run for two consecutive groups over a fortnight, comprised of 23 participants. Course participants included Medical Directors (MDs) of hospitals in Lagos, Heads of Departments, Administrative Directors and Director of Medical Services.

Much of the programme focused on generic leadership skills illustrated by case studies taken from the NHS in the UK incorporating themes of service quality and whole system change based on:
  • Leadership skills and learning style
  • Leading change and leadership behaviours
  • Strategic leadership methods
  • Building teams
  • Dealing with difficult issues, endings and appreciations

Incorporated into the sessions was experiential learning in large and small groups, one to one exercises, facilitated dialogue and questionnaires/instruments.

The programme enabled participants to practice leadership skills and, through interaction, surface solutions for organisation change, building teams and developing people as well as achieving clinical tasks.
