Records Management, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria
As part of an overall programme to enhance the corporate management of its information resources in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a 10 day course on records management was delivered by RIPA International in September last year. The course was attended by 40 staff from different departments with responsibility for records management in their business area.
Through previous work with RIPA International, CBN has developed a detailed records management policy and procedures manual. Additionally CBN has in place a purpose built records centre and is in the process of implementing an automated file tracking and retrieval system. Despite these impressive improvements the policy and procedures are not fully adopted throughout the bank.
Consequently the focus of this programme was to provide participants with a series of professional skills and the confidence to implement the proposed changes in records management including:
- Key records management activities (capture, registration, classification, indexing, tracking, maintenance, appraisal and disposal)
- Records security and business continuity
- Electronic information management
- Project and change management
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Training and development
The level of enthusiasm and engagement with course activities, which included RIPA International’s usual mix of lectures, syndicate work, exercises and even a couple of highly successful role plays, was extremely high. As a result of this programme, participants were empowered to develop a standardised policy framework and were congratulated for the effort they put in to studying and reviewing.
