The European Union of today seems hardly recognisable from the tender integration project that began in the immediate aftermath of World War II. What started out as a means for safeguarding peace and enabling economic recovery amongst six members developed into the world’s most formidable trading bloc. Recent seismic events such as the sovereign debt crises in the Eurozone, the currency crises in Central and Eastern Europe, or the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty all point to a state of flux for the European integration project.
For the practitioner, this period – arguably the most challenging that the European Union has ever experienced - represents a difficult time that requires a constant update of knowledge and information, and a readiness to change previous practises and perceptions.
This course therefore aims to offer a concise analysis of recent legal developments that have shaped the EU project and more specifically the relationship between the member states and an ever-growing system of EU governance.
This course is aimed at members of the legal profession in candidate and accession countries, including judges, lawyers, civil servants or the business community.
