Course ref: 10ComPolice

Overview:

Since the mid 1980’s policing organisations throughout the world have attempted to develop and implement a variety of community-based, neighborhood-oriented approaches to policing. All recognise that effective policing requires the active participation of citizens. All are aimed at developing an effective working relationship between the police and the community with regard to the prevention, reduction and detection of crime.

Many form part of a broader social and political agenda aimed at enhancing access to justice and building and sustaining safer communities. This two week programme is designed to provide an overview of recent UK initiatives in citizen focused policing, which aim to meet the policing and criminal justice needs identified by individuals and communities themselves. It recognises that citizen-focused policing does not only apply to the public facing parts of the organisation, but to everyone within all forces, at all levels, whatever their function. It will review international best practice and ask whether community policing really works.

The programme is intended to equip participants with the skills needed to plan and implement citizen focused policing strategies which ensure that the needs and concerns of citizens are integral to the way policing is conceived, managed and delivered.
